Vienna
I had a great time in Vienna. It was so interesting to go to another European country for the weekend because it gives me something besides the US to compare Italy to. One thing I know for sure is that no country in Europe is even close to being identical! First off, I was surprised that Vienna was so much cleaner than Rome. The public transport in Vienna is also a lot better set up and I couldn't believe all of the different food choices! I could eat something besides pasta, pizza, and paninis? It was almost like I was back in America...Except everyone was speaking German, which I am 92 percent sure is a language I could never master. Luckily we had Hannah and Alex, our German-speaking tour guides who made the weekend so much more fun! We went to a lot of cool places, and here are some of my best pictures, in no particular order.
On Friday night, Alex and Hannah took us to get classic Weiner Schnitzel. Whitney was a bit shocked when she realized she ordered the giant Schnitzel...Half of the restaurant started cracking up when they saw the look on her face!
Hannah and I enjoying our Austrian Ottakringer Beer.
Hannah showed us the best place for coffee and the traditional Viennese Sachertorte. Apparently they are as serious about coffee in Vienna as Seattle. Most cafe's sell various types of coffee for 3-6 Euro which is wildly expensive, but worth it. I still think Italians are the most serious about their country's coffee though because I'm pretty sure there are no Starbucks here in Italy, while in Vienna I saw several that had taken over.
Alex, Whitney's friend and a former exchange student from UW showed us all around Vienna.
The Votivkirche Chuch
On Saturday we went to the Freud Museum. The museum is in Freud's old apartment where he used to have his practice. It was pretty cool. They had a bunch of his old documents, pictures, essays, and movies. It was interesting to be in his actual house and they also had a Hitchcock movie exhibit and old pictures of Andy Warhol and his famous "couch" that has been linked to Freud.
I never knew that Freud did a bunch of studies on cocaine until my trip to the museum.
Freud's old waiting room for his patients.
Those Austrian's gotta rep the governator. Whitney is from Cali and not as excited as me about seeing his street art.
At City Hall where they set up an epic ice skating rink. Too bad I can't ice skate well AT ALL.

I was SOO excited when I saw this parade come out of city hall. The outfits were so old-school Austrian. I loved it.
Another traditional Austrian delight that we had was apple strudel. I couldn't believe how TASTY it was, I was in heaven!

Later on Saturday we went to Belvedere Palace, where they had a really cool art exhibit inside. It was some of the coolest art I had ever seen because it was more modern. They had a few Monets, but best of all they had Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" painting there. It was so much more beautiful in real life and going to the museum made me wish I had taken a few art history classes because I feel so clueless about all the art. I wish I could have taken pictures, but after the one above I got yelled at by the museum workers. I thought it was okay to imitate art. Geez.
The outside of Belevedere.
On Saturday night Alex brought us to this awesome bar. It was a place you would have never found in Rick Steve's books or as a tourist in general. It was on some random side street and didn't even have a name outside it. There was just a red door and inside it was really dark with cool lighting and old movie chairs.
Alex, Stephanie and Phillip at the bar. Phillip reminded me of a mixture of Logan and Johnny Depp circa Edward Scissorhands. This isn't the best shot of Phillip but you had to see him in person to believe it!
This is an example of me trying to be "artsy" and take a picture of Whitney and the Un-Italian late night drunk delights poster.
I made the worst decision ever and decided to try what looked to be a dipped cone from Dairy Queen. Except it wasn't frozen and instead filled with pure marshmallow cream sugar grossness. I was warned about this, but just "HAD" to try it "or I'd regret it."
Whitney and I in the cool bar.

Backtracking to Friday, here we are at the Schönbrunn Palace. It was such a beautiful day and we had a great time just relaxing at the palace.

This was on Thursday night when Hannah introduced us to the famous Kaesekrainer. It was really good, but I found that Austrian food is really heavy and I regretted eating it later...
The StephansDome in the center of Vienna.

On Sunday at the train station. I bought so much at H&M that my backpack was about to EXPLODE. Below is a picture of our "Niki" flight. The bug on the side of the plane was hilarious, seriously, who puts a giant bug on their airplane?

Siena
Siena was a good change from Rome. After a comfy bus ride with a great view of the Tuscan countryside, we were there!
The view from the bus!
We checked into our hotel and went exploring through the busy streets. I couldn't believe how crowded it was, I can only imagine what it's like in the Spring and Summer! We relaxed in the Piazza del Campo and then went to lunch. I had one of my first authentic Italian meals - pasta with olive and duck sauce. I'm usually not that into duck, but this was good! Chrissy tried the boar pasta, also unique and delish. The rest of the day was spent exploring, relaxing, and going to the Duomo, the famous Church in Siena.
Chillin in the Piazza del Campo, a great place to people watch in Siena.

The famous Duomo, too bad there was a crane in the way ruining my shot!
This one is for you Jen, Pooh was randomly sitting on a pillar in the Piazza del Campo all by himself!
On Sunday we ventured up to the top of the Torre del Mangia, the big tower in the Piazza del Campo. It took us a good 15 minutes to walk up the entire thing, and I think I almost passed out from being so claustrophobic. But once we got to the top it was amazing! We didn't get the most spectacular view since it was a little foggy out, but it was still totally worth the 7 euros I paid to go up there.

We were up SO high!

Dusk in Siena
Great picture. It reminds me of the song, "WHEN THE MOON HITS YOUR EYE LIKE A BIG PIZZA PIE THAT'S AMORE..."
Mom...I bought you a present that was hand-painted from this man. His family has been painting things for generations. I bet you can't guess what I bought you...
Pooh also enjoyed the view of the Piazza del Campo.

Tivoli and Hardian's Villa
Below are the pictures from the Tivoli Gardens. It reminded me a little bit of Versailles, which has one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen.
